Stretch the yumi on a safe surface. Hold the yumi with the lower end in the groin and press the bow down in a controlled manner with your left hand until you can hang the tsuru with your right hand. Make sure that the knots are correct.  The kami no shigake (knot winding above) is directed to the right. The shimo no shigake (knot winding down) is directed to the left. The knots are also simply called "Tsuru wa".
